Please note the following league changes:

SPOKANE AAU BASKETBALL
BACKCOURT RULE INTERPRETATION
IMPACTING ALL 4TH GRADE GAMES
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2013

All Spokane AAU 4thh grade games are subject to a 10 second backcourt count that will be enforced by the game officials. The rules permit a coach to call a time-out with the ball in the backcourt. However, because Spokane AAU has a "no press" rule for all 4th grade games, it is not within the spirit of the rules for a coach to call one or more time-outs to "buy" additional 10 second backcourt counts. Therefore, a coach in a 4th grade game will still be permitted to exercise a time-out while the ball is in the backcourt, BUT THE 10 SECOND COUNT WILL REMAIN AS IF NO TIME-OUT HAD OCCURRED. For example, if a 4th grade coach calls a time-out while the ball is in the backcourt and the count is at 8, the count will resume at 9 once the ball is controlled by an offensive player in the backcourt. 4th grade coaches will no longer be entitled to use up more than 10 seconds of clock time in the backcourt when freely bringing the ball up court.

Further, once a 4th grade team crosses half court, that team cannot have free access to the backcourt again until a change in possession occurs. This means that if, for any reason, within that continuous possession the team on offense leaves the front court and enters the backcourt, the defensive team can cross the half court line and defend the ball in the backcourt during that specific possession, SUBJECT TO NO PRESS, NO DOUBLE TEAM AND NO TRAP.

For instance, if a 4th grade team crosses half court and a foul occurs against the defensive team that results in no free throws and the offensive team inbounds the ball into the backcourt, the defensive team can defend there during that possession. Further, if a 4th grade team crosses half court and the ball goes out of bounds during that possession, or a jump ball occurs, and the offensive team retains possession and inbounds the ball into the backcourt, the defensive team can defend in the backcourt during that specific possession.
